Gilles Martin-Raget was at the BMW-ORACLE Racing base in Valencia, early in the morning of the first day of the America’s Cup competition to record the lead-up to the first day of what everyone thought would never happen; racing becoming a reality – and it’s great to get away from the court room – shame the weather didn’t play ball.

Below is the crew list for this historic day. Included in the crew are two Australians who had their first America’s Cup adventure as part of Syd Fischer’s Young Australia crew in 2000 - James Spithill and Joey Newton - and boy have they come a long way.

Brad Webb (NZL) Bowman

Simone de Mari (ITA) Pitman

Ross Halcrow (NZL) Jib Trimmer

Dirk de Ridder (NED) Wing Sail Trimmer

Joey Newton (AUS) Wing Sail Caddy

John Kostecki (USA) Tactician

James Spithill (AUS) Skipper/Helmsman

Matteo Plazzi (ITA) Navigator

Thierry Fouchier (FRA) Aft Pit

Matthew Mason (NZL) Mast
