Seasons
Employment in the marine industry is seasonal but if you prove to be a valued employee chances are you'll have a job all year round. For example - in Queensland the charter boats are busiest in winter - June to November and in Sydney they are busy in Summer - October to March. Easter is a busy time in both areas. It is important to be in an area looking for a job just prior to the busy times and not at the end of the season. Check out the boatingOZ calendars for events and school holiday dates for peak times.
Be there
Unless you are highly qualified with lots of experience and good references you will need to be in an area and available for an interview if a job comes up. Most unskilled jobs in the marine industry are not advertised so ask around the marinas and the sailing clubs for anyone wanting staff.
Qualifications which are helpful to gain employment in the marine industry are:
- Mechanic
- Engineer
- Carpenter
- Plumber
- Diver
- Computer skills
